Clint Murchison '08 in Serabu

“It is amazing how the whole community responds to Tom and Cathy. The contributions they’ve made are incredible.

“They have become a community developer and it is easy to see the progress the community has made from the good they’re doing.

“They’ve set up a program to help some of the kids go to college,” he said. “They don’t just give them money.”

“Cathy is working all the time in the eye clinic.

“Tom does all the other stuff like organizing the community activities, keeping the clinic running, brining in locals to work in the eye clinic.

“I helped out where I could,” he said. “I spent a lot of time running around with the kids.”
“Seeing a white person is a big deal for them. I have a lot of fun playing wit them.”

Murchison also became friends with two young men named Jonas and Martin, who were his hosts.

“The best thing about the whole experience is the people,” Murchison laughed. “You’re from completely different worlds.”

During his summer stay, Murchison took a local taxi with Martin to the college Jonas was attending.

“Their form of a college campus is completely different from ours.

“It definitely helps you appreciate where you are, how we live.

“It also shows me how easy and pampered we are,” Murchison added.

He remembered seeing a small kid running around barefoot. Ants were biting his feet. Murchison pointed to the ants.  The boy just laughed started stepping on them.

Jonas and Martin will travel to the US this summer as guests of the Murchisons.

“I am hoping they can stay for a month,” he said.

“Serabu was shock for me. I think America will be an even greater shock for them.”
