Ordination to the Priesthood
Fr. Justin, who has taught Latin in the Prep School for 4 years, was ordained on August 15. He will be studying this school year in the Cistercian Monastery of Heiligenkreuz, Austria—the oldest continuously-occupied Cistercian Monastery in the world. We look forward to having him teach in the school again next year.

Ford Tough Private School Player of the Week
The Cistercian Quarterback overcame an early-game ankle injury to lead Cistercian to a 65-49 win over Houston St. John's, keeping the Hawks' playoff chances alive. Though originally diagnosed with a multiple-game injury, he sat out only one series before returning to action. He wound up hitting 20 of 35 passes for 335 yards and an amazing eight TDs. He also rushed for 146 yards and another score. A 3.3 GPA student in all honors courses, he is beginning to attract attention from a wide variety of programs from Colorado State and Nevada to the Ivies. He gives generously of his time at local shelters, running dance parties for those with Down syndrome and two book drives.

Cistercian Speech Team
The Cistercian Diocesan Middle School Speech League team competed in the year’s first competition this Saturday at Saint Rita’s. Congratulations to the five Cistercian students who brought home first-place ribbons, and five more who earned second-place!

Middle School Finds Gold in Treasure Island
Mr. Dylan Key and the Cistercian Middle School recently completed Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Congratulations to all those that participated in this marvelous production.

Flash Fiction
In October the Library hosted a Flash Fiction contest. Flash fiction is an extremely brief story, typically only a few hundred words in its entirety. In the spirit of Flash fiction, participants had to write a short story in one page, and the objective was to make it a scary story in the spirit of gentle terror inspired by Halloween. With Father Stephen as a difficult judge to frighten, a Form IV student won for his longer piece of eerie storytelling (including a tombstone illustration), while a Form III student was recognized for his extremely short but nonetheless unsettling story.

2014 Cistercian Alumni Take Their Game to a Higher Level
Jack Skaggs #15 is "on the ice" for the Villanova Hockey team. He scored the winning goal in their first fall contest. Recently, Andrew Beytagh #14 played over half the game as defensive corner in their Homecoming victory over Washington University.

Cistercian Tapestry Presentation
Longtime friends of Fr. Julius, Frank and Judy Tibenszky commissioned a beautiful Hungarian tapestry for Founders Hall and delivered it to the School on October 25th. The following day, Mr. Tibenszky made a presentation to Form I-III.

Urban Art Tour
The Freshmen and Sophomores went on an Urban Art Tour – experiencing both the practical aspects of getting around town on the DART rail system but also exploring the art at some of the stops (UD Station, Inwood, Deep Ellum, Fair Park) and also walking the Arts District. The day ended with different kinds of sustenance (spiritual renewal from a brief quiet time in the Cathedral Guadalupe and physical renewal from a visit to Klyde Warren Park’s green space and food trucks).

Flannery O’Connor: A 50-Year Retrospective 2014
On November 6, Cistercian Preparatory School hosted an interscholastic academic colloquium entitled “Flannery O’Connor: A 50-Year Retrospective.” For this colloquium juniors and seniors from Cistercian and 11 other area schools presented original essays analyzing one of three short stories by Flannery O’Connor (1925-1964), one of the United States’ great authors. After an opening presentation lecture by Fr. Gregory Schweers, 48 students presented their papers and then fielded questions posed by students and faculty. The colloquium’s keynote speaker was Professor Ralph C. Wood, a theologian and notable O’Connor scholar. Dr. Wood currently teaches at Baylor University; he is an editorial board member of the Flannery O’Connor Review and author of Flannery O’Connor and the Christ-Haunted South.

Treasure Island Project
First year English faculty member, Adam Hauser, assigned a book project after Form III’s reading of Treasure Island to go along with the Middle School Theater’s rendition of the play. The boys loved building pirate ships and acting as pirates throughout the month of November! Ahoy!

Cistercian student is recognized at the Mexican Consulate
A Cistercian Junior invested a total of 217 hours and raised about $6,000 to transform a dusty storage room into a children¹s library and reading/music corner.

Exodus has received two yearbook awards for last year's book, Band of Brothers: an Award of Achievement from the Interscholastic League Press Conference and a First Class honor rating from the National Scholastic Press Association Last year's assistant editors, and this year's editors-in-chief are holding the two awards in this photo.

Form VIII Chemistry Tests
Seniors use the titration procedure to pass quantities of one solution into another solution in order to complete a reaction. They then use this information to perform calculations to learn the concentration of the solution.

U.S. Men's National Taekwondo
A Cistercian Senior is the 2014 Men's National Fly Weight Champion in Taekwondo and he won Team Trials this weekend to earn a place on the U.S. Men's National Taekwondo Team. They will represent the US and compete at the World Championships in Russia.

Fr. Bernard's 7th consecutive Cowtown Ultra
This year's Full and Ultra Cowtown Marathons were canceled due to unfavorable weather conditions, but Fr. Bernard didn't let that stop him from completing his "Virtual" Ultra remotely from Budapest, Hungary. He finished his 7th consecutive 50K in 7 hours, 37 minutes. Way to go, Fr. Bernard!

Congratulations to Mr. Gary Nied, Mr. James Burk, and Mr. Dylan Key, who received the Work of Heart Award from the Catholic Foundation! Work of Heart recipients are selected from written nominations submitted to the Catholic Foundation and judged based on traditional merit criteria including tenure and leadership, acts of kindness or charity, Christian example, mentoring and simply going the extra mile for an individual student, family or the community.

Upper School Community Service
Thanks to everyone who participated in Upper School Community Service Day. Seniors (with Form I students) helped repair the stations trails, juniors volunteered with Keep Irving Beautiful-Great American Clean Up, sophomores helped with a clothing drive at Mission Arlington, and the freshmen delivered bedding to homes in need throughout Dallas as part of the “Bedstart” program.

Form I joined Form VIII to perform some simple maintenance the Stations of the Cross trail. Teams lined the trail with logs and cleared out some underbrush from the area. The seniors had been working on the trail for years and were happy to hand it off to the school’s youngest class.

Growing passion fuels creation of school's pro-life club
Students and faculty members at Cistercian have participated in the pro-life movement for a number of years, but it was only in April 2014 that the school formally organized its' student-run pro-life club.

70th Anniversary of Ordination
On May 8, 1945, the date of the Allied Victory in Europe, Bishop Jozsef Mindzsenty, later cardinal, ordained Ralph March, O.Cist. to the priesthood in the Cistercian Abbey of Zirc in Hungary.

A Form I student wanted to make a difference and help people in his community, so he and his friends celebrated his birthday by donating food to Catholic Charities of Dallas.

"Believe in You"
A well-deserving senior is receiving the 2015 Herff Jones “Believe in You” Principal’s Award from Ms. Angela Hackett, given to one student from each nominating high school who has demonstrated academic success, community service and exemplary leadership. He was nominated by Mr. Peter Saliga, our Director of College Counseling, and is now competing with nominees from across the state for a possible scholarship.

Swim Honors
Well done! A Cistercian Sophomore will receive the “SPC SWIMMER OF THE YEAR” award for his outstanding performance at the SPC Championships. He currently holds 3 individual SPC swim records, more than any other current record holder! He also qualifies as a "High School All American" in swimming for 2014-2015 from the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.

Form II recreated an “Exultet Scroll”, making an illuminated manuscript of the medieval Easter hymn (which is traditionally sung at the Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday).

Lake Cistercian
Recent Texas sized flooding put our lower campus under a LOT of water. Frs. John and Thomas are shown paddling the parking lots. Ducks, fish, turtles, a heron... and, of course, the sunken car... turned Cistercian into a different kind of wilderness wonderland.
